To evaluate the effect of stem cell based therapies in the treatment of osteoporosis, we searched "PubMed," "Elsevier," "Web of Science," "Cochrane library" databases for studies published between January 2000 to December 2018, with the mesh words "osteoporosis," "stem cell," "transplantation," "injection," "meschencymal" for randomized controlled trials, half randomized controlled studies and prospective studies concerning the therapeutic efficacy of stem cell transplantation in the treatment of osteoporosis. All the data was analyzed by review manager 5.3 software. There were 9 studies including 123 subjects concerning the effect of stem cell based therapies in the treatment of osteoporosis. Mean difference between the experimental and control groups was 0.17 (95% confidence interval: 0.02, 0.32, P = 0.02) on bone mineral density based analysis and 4.54 (95% confidence interval: 3.89, 5.19, P < 0.01) on urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) based analysis, suggesting that stem cell infusion can significantly increase bone mineral density and decrease urinary DPD. Those results indicate that mesenchymal stem cell transplantation can be an effective modality in the treatment of osteoporosis.
