We could induce apoptosis in primary Cultures of cortical neurons of fetal mice with ceramide or sorbitol. The induction was accompanied by an increase in caspase-3 (CAS-3) activity and depolarization of the inner mitochondrial membrane of neuronal cells which both could be reversed by Herpes simplex virus I (HSV-1) infection. We conclude tha HSV-1 infection inhibited the apoptosis, induced in neuronal cells by sorbitol or ceramide, via a CAS-dependent pathway.
